from past experience....degenerate gamblers usually run out of money all-together, they tap all resources from job, friends, family, any sources of income untill they are broke and have no-one to turn too...

in essence the cut themselves off eventually..

also, how can you justify whats degenerate behavior?
whats degenerate to me, might just be recreational to someone else...just because a man bets every game on the board for a nickle each, and doesnt ever win...doesnt neccesarilly mean he is a degerenate gambler..just bad...

DREAM MAKER....this is an excellent post, and really there isnt just one correct answer...

I dont think it would help anything except make the gambler open more accounts. the gambler would still find a way to bet as much as he wanted.

I recall when the riverboat casinos first hit the scene in the state of Iowa. The state had a $200.00/day betting limit. This of course lasted until the riverboats boats began docking across the river on the Illinois side where there were no limits.

A punter will always find successful ways around limits, restrictions and laws in his quest to lose his quid, while "the dogs of doom hollow and moan."

I can also recall that these riverboat casinos were also publically held companies...in time, stock holders found a $1.00 chip would buy a share of stock.

As a reminder of how unstable these joints were, I'd mention to the dealers while placing a couple of $5.00 chips on the Blackjack table, that I'd be playing for 10 shares of ownership.

They didn't seem too humored...

Probably because they were all share holders who bought at $30.00/share.

Sometimes you just can't beat them...even by joining as an owner.

Nope, let them sell the family dog if they have to

Let it ride baby, the mortgage and the whole ship

If you win then you win

If you lose, then oh well

...Oh well, if you have to, you keep the dog to eat.

Should bar ownwers allow patrons to drnk and drive? Should crack house managers enforce stayover rules? Should lifeguards kick me out of the Ocean when I have been surfing 4 straight hours, and they know what I have done in the Ocean?

As long as there are people the discussion will continue about the "grey areas", for me this country is based on the freedom of choice. Albeit we are inendated with medium bullshit and even if the freedom of choice becomes blurred; each man is responsible for his on measures. But then the question becomes, is each man capable of cerebral responsibility. The hard lessons are always the best learned. I would therefore have to say no, the book is not responsible for a players action!

eric17,I believe its not about USA only, gambling via internet its a worldwide thing.
My opinion is that if a bookie wishes to put limit on winnings, they ought to put limit on losses also.
Many people losing tons of cash every year, its a pitty.I guess they are not even able to remember when did they switch from 10$ stakes to dimes.

VG, I know its a tough issue but once you start implementing parameters, where does it end?

I am a benovolent man but I like freedom over safety contraints!

I think it should be up to the player to ask the book for this kind of ... facility.

Don't think it wouldn't hurt to have books offering it though. True gamblers do loose control at times, and if they realize it upfront its just fine to have someone remind them they're going to far..

My two cents.

IMO........the lessons we learn the "hard way" are the ones that stay with us the longest....

ive been invovlved in gambling all my life.....but that doesnt neccessarily make me a "smart" gambler...

case in point, several years ago at the horshoe i blew 56k....enough to make me sick to my stomach and NEVER again get my nose that wide open...now when i go to a casino, a few dimes is all they can and will ever get from me...

even though im on the "house" side of gambling and know fully well that the player is at a disadvantage at the casino, it didnt keep me from blowing big and learning a valuable lesson..
